J. Salvador Icaza V

"Success in litigation is not just about persuasive advocacy; it also involves understanding how to use rules, procedures, and the law to your client's advantage."

With a first-hand perspective gained while working in health care, an academic emphasis on trial advocacy, and behind-the-bench insights acquired through a judicial clerkship at the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, J. Salvador (Sal) Icaza V focuses his practice on medical malpractice litigation and other contested matters.

Sal is passionate about being a forceful voice for his clients and works closely with them to protect their interests inside and outside the courtroom. His background before embarking on his legal career makes him particularly well-suited to his health care practice. As a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician, Sal held various roles on the pharmaceutical front lines, interacting with providers, insurers, and patients alike to develop an understanding of the practical challenges and potential regulatory and compliance pitfalls involved in serving patients and advancing health systems. This experience informs his approach to representing health care clients and provides him with an advantage when interpreting medical records and collaborating with experts whose opinions and testimony can be outcome-determinative.

As he earned his law degree from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, Sal also received a Health Law Certificate and competed on the Thurgood Marshall National Trial Team. Sal complemented his legal studies with diverse real-world roles. These include a judicial internship in the Appellate Court of Maryland that exposed him to a broad spectrum of cases and the intricacies of appellate practice. Sal also served as a law clerk for the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, where his work included health care fraud and abuse matters such as those arising under the Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, and False Claims Act. In addition, he served his community as a student attorney in the Youth, Education, and Justice Clinic, where he advocated for the release of incarcerated individuals during their parole and post-conviction proceedings.

Fluent in Spanish and a first-generation American, Sal is active in several professional organizations, including the Young Lawyers Section of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association.
